Over recent years several EU directives have gradually reduced the amount of sulphur in fuel. 15 years ago there was 5000 ppm (parts per million) and now most fuels only have 10ppm. The amount of sulphur in fuel is directly related to the lubricating properties of the fuel and recent studies have shown that with ULS fuel (Ultra Low Sulphur) there is huge variation in the lubricating properties of one batch of fuel to the next.
Very poorly lubricating fuel can cause serious damage to key engine components such as fuel pumps and injectors as well as general engine wear. In an effort to tackle this issue ADERCO have developed L1050 lubricity improver which brings the lubricating effect of ULS fuel back to a similar level it had with 5000 ppm fuel – but without adding the sulphur.
