Around 13/04/10 I took 1000 litres of kerosene at the best boilerjuice price from a supplier I hadn’t used before. This took tank volume to 1250 litres. This is fed to my Rayburn Nouvelle. Within a day I was getting a regular “popping” sound on idle. More seriously though, I was getting severe sooting on full flame. It was so bad that thick black smoke could be seen in the flame and the sight glass would go from clear to completely opaque with soot in a matter of minutes. If I ignored this, flames would begin to lick out of the front of the appliance.

Although the Rayburn had been working fine before the oil delivery, I thought it would be prudent to clean and examine the cooker burner. The examination showed nothing abnormal, just a few heavy carbon deposits as expected in view of the few months elapsed since its last service. After reassembly, symptoms persisted.  I removed the flame control knob to prevent anyone turning the flame up whilst I considered the predicament.

The next area I considered was the oil control valve and the flow rate. But before this, I decided it was time to roll out the most serious tool in my kit......the internet.  My oil/Rayburn/soot related searches quickly lead me to Aderco and Ecofuels. I was a bit sceptical particularly when I saw the recommended dilutions. How could such a small amount of additive fix such a severe problem in 300 gallons of fuel? Anyway, at beginning of May I gave it a double dose (still only half a litre in 1000+). Within a few days the popping reduced but the sooting persisted. A few weeks later, no popping but still sooting.

It got to July, oil prices had fallen steadily, the Rayburn was quietly ticking over so it seemed like a good time to top up the tank  before I considered getting back to fix the Rayburn. Would I get any more Aderco?  I cleaned the sight glass, replaced the knob and turned to full flame.....No sooting and a perfect regular blue flame as if it had just been serviced! I think I can reasonably conclude that the Aderco took a number of weeks to disperse into the 1250 litres, but has proceeded to turn the worst Rayburn compatible oil into the best. So, I shall definitely be continuing the Aderco treatment and I’ll make sure that I have enough to add before the oil delivery to expedite the mix and the undeniable benefits. To this end, I’ve just received, promptly as ever, my next litre of Aderco.

Many Thanks,

Steve.

The Aderco works well - our Aga had been giving a lot of trouble but it has run perfectly since I started adding Aderco four months ago.  I'm about to order some more for the winter.

Unfortunately I missed the oil delivery by about 1 hour, so had to add the 1/2 litre to the full tank but I did give the tank a good stir (chemist's term for long piece of wood) after the addition... that was on 26 August.

It was about a week there about's that we began to notice the AGA was definitely hotter, even though I had turned the thermostat down a little in anticipation; but it was still some way below the optimum mark. We then subsequently had the high winds from the hurricane that came across the Atlantic, which boosted the temperature up to and above the optimum mark (not even achieved with high winds for 2-3 years). I turned the thermostat down further but in spite of the wind dropping the temperature has stayed up. Instead of running the thermostat on 4 we are now running on 3, or even slightly below, and the temperature is staying up.

Our AGA is a little overdue for service and is booked for early October, I had not expected to see much effect until it was serviced but it really is great to have it back working at optimum temperature, especially ahead of the winter.

We have an oil purchase group in our twin villages here and I have asked if others are having problems and I have had one or 2 comments so far. I will be reporting on our success with Aderco 5000, on our village website and will be placing my next order for the litre size in due course.

Anyway, thanks so far for a great product that does seem, so far, to do all it claims and reach those parts of an AGA nothing else could reach.

Thanks
